Bungie has officially announced the end of active development for Destiny 2, with its final live-service update scheduled for June 2026. This marks the culmination of nearly a decade of content and evolution for the game.
The studio stated that following the "The Final Shape" expansion, they have reached a point where "our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2." Bungie intends for the forthcoming update to make Destiny 2 a welcoming environment for returning players, ensuring all existing content remains accessible, along with that of the original Destiny.
This decision arrives amidst a backdrop of financial reporting that indicates challenges. Sony recorded a significant value impairment related to Destiny 2's performance, totaling approximately 31.5 billion yen (around $204.2 million USD) in the second quarter of the fiscal year, followed by a further impairment of 88.6 billion yen (approximately $565 million USD) in the last quarter.

While Destiny 2 has been a successful title, drawing millions of players and achieving significant sales over the years, reports suggest the game has been "struggling." Beyond Destiny 2, Bungie's focus appears to be shifting. The studio recently released 'Marathon', an extraction shooter, in March of the last fiscal year. News surrounding 'Marathon' includes updates on balance adjustments, progression systems, new gear and rewards, and initiatives to support solo players and teams. A new collection of Displate featuring 'Marathon' art has also been released.
